Number Stations
For more than 30 years the Shortwave radio spectrum has been used by the worlds intelligence agencies to transmit secret messages. These messages are transmitted by hundreds of “Numbers Stations”.
Shortwave Numbers Stations are a perfect method of anonymous, one way communication. Spies located anywhere in the world can be communicated to by their masters via small, locally available, and unmodified Shortwave receivers. The encryption system used by Numbers Stations, known as a “one time pad” is unbreakable. Combine this with the fact that it is almost impossible to track down the message recipients once they are inserted into the enemy country, it becomes clear just how powerful the Numbers Station system is.
These stations use very rigid schedules, and transmit in many different languages, employing male and female voices repeating strings of numbers or phonetic letters day and night, all year round.
The voices are of varying pitches and intonation; there is even a German station (The Swedish Rhapsody) that transmits a female child's voice!
One might think that these espionage activities should have wound down considerably since the official “end of the cold war”, but nothing could be further from the truth. Numbers Stations (and by inference, spies) are as busy as ever, with many new and bizarre stations appearing since the fall of the Berlin wall.
Why is it that in over 30 years, the phenomenon of Numbers Stations has gone almost totally unreported? What are the agencies behind the Numbers Stations, and why are the eastern European stations still on the air? Why does the Czech republic operate a Numbers Station 24 hours a day? How is it that Numbers Stations are allowed to interfere with essential radio services like air traffic control and shipping without having to answer to anybody? Why does the “Swedish Rhapsody” Numbers Station use a small girls voice?
These are just some of the questions that remain unanswered.
[Here are Some Bits From A Wired Magazine Article]
As shortwave is abandoned by public broadcasters in favor of satellite and the internet, these curious stations continue to broadcast, seemingly unaffected by the end of the Cold War or the development of new technologies. But even listening to the signals is illegal in some countries.
No government has ever acknowledged a numbers station, but the British Department of Trade and Industry told London's Daily Telegraph in 1997 that there was no mystery and that the stations were not "intended for public consumption."
Number station signals are not low-powered, which would suggest in-the-field broadcasts by clandestine operatives. Rather, they come from powerful transmitters with global reach, requiring massive masts that are not easily hidden.
Wired News has a good article on the subject.

TweetSigns Of The Times?
I was going through my phone and noticed I have a tendency to take pictures of things that just strike me as a "WTF Moment"... here are some of those pics...
The first in the roll, was a sign at a bank. It seems that someone could have worded this better. This one really makes you feel like your money is safe... and you are safe as well...

When I buy my dog treats it's always good to note that they are non-toxic.

Open - TELL 8! Because 8 needs to know!

This gem was sighted in a pub in Newport, OR during a weekend vacation.

I had never considered the risk of drowning in an elevator until this...
This has obviously been such a problem that a sign was required.....
You gotta love free stuff.. but what are they saying about the back of the brig? And have people been taking their free couches and "briging" them back to the point where it has become problematic enough to require a sign?
When you are in Winco buying dog treats... No Sampling PLEASE!

This just confused me.. to the point where wikipedia was required...

Top-5 Best Flash Mobs
flash mob (noun): A group of people who appear from out of nowhere, to perfom predetermined actions, designed to amuse and confuse surrounding people. The group performs these actions for a short amount of time before quickly dispersing. Flash mobs are often organised through email and/or newsgroup postings.
Number 5: Oprah Flash Mob
During The Oprah Show's 24th season kickoff party, Harpo staff and more than 20,000 people pulled off a massive surprise for an unsuspecting Oprah. The entire crowd performed a choreographed piece to the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," and Oprah was not only shocked, she was thrilled! Award-winning director Michael Gracey says the interaction between the Black Eyed Peas and the crowd is what made the flash mob so extraordinary.
"There's something really special when you take an audience and instead of just being passive and watching, you invite them to participate," he says. "That's why it was so magical for both parties. Two groups of people came together to create something that neither of them could have done alone."
There is also a making of video of this one here: http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/The-Making-of-Oprahs-Flash-Mob-Dance-Video
Number 4: Liverpool
There are many ways to kill time while waiting for your train - read a paper, grab a sandwich . . . break into a synchronised dance? It certainly got the attention of commuters at Liverpool Street Station, as 400 strangers - including tourists and Underground staff - suddenly leaped into action, busting out a co-ordinated mix of hip-hop, disco and ballroom moves right in the middle of the London station.
Number 3: Michael Jackson in Sweden
Street Dance Group "Bounce Sweden" put this one together. More than 300 dancers met at 15.30, got informed and then learned the choreography in 30 min. Less then 1 hour later they performed it.
Number 2: Grand Central Station, The Sound Of Music
More than 200 dancers were performing their version of "Do Re Mi", in the Central Station of Antwerp. with just 2 rehearsals they created this amazing stunt! Those 4 fantastic minutes started the 23 of march 2009, 08:00 AM. It is a promotion stunt for a Belgian television program, where they are looking for someone to play the leading role, in the musical of "The Sound of Music".
Number 1: MC Hammer Pants Flash Mob
Number one on this list is one of my hands-down all time favorites. A group of dancers take over a Macy's department store, all wearing gold MC-Hammer pants and proceed to dance to "Cant Touch This".
TweetMel’s Hole
Broadcasting from his double-wide trailer in Nevada, Art bell was good at what he did, and in his heyday, there was one broadcast that had me completely enthralled. Mel's hole is one of those stories I listened to on the edge of my seating cursing commercials because they where too long.
I came across some mp3s of the broadcast(s) and here they are. The story is basically this
The hole, the story goes, exists outside of town on land once owned by a man who calls himself Mel Waters. For years, he said, it was used as the neighborhood dump for trash, old appliances, dead cattle. When the hole never filled up, Waters measured its depth by lowering weighted fishing line into it. After 80,000 feet, he gave up. Amazed by this odd place (which dogs and birds avoided), Waters called radio host Art Bell, whose late-night show on conspiracies and the paranormal attracts a huge national audience.
