The Open Source Game Experiment….

Open source projects are an interesting thing. You work with developers you will likely never meet in person. Not too different than some of the professional projects I’m involved with. However, when building an open source video game, things like age differences, time differences, language barriers, and a multitude of other barriers come into play. A Video game is particularly difficult, as a game can take years to develop and your average gamer gets a game and plays it for a month or two and then is onto the next greatest thing. Keeping interest in such a long term project in both the developers and the intended audience can be quite a challenge. I get the impression that other sorts of open source software projects have the luxury to evolve more naturally. With a video game, if you spend 3 years in the making, you can expect video game technology in general to improve 10 fold for each year of development. This means that when you finally have your 1.0 release it's already 30 internet years behind. That makes it hard to hold the interest of an average gamer, who has watched dozens and dozens of games go from announcement to release all with superior tech behind them. (Not to mention a full time staff creating them.)

Like many open source projects, it’s unlikely you have a sponsor and you’re putting in hundreds of hours of work for free, in hopes that it will turn into something people enjoy. Again, at least a piece of software will find some usefulness with someone, somewhere. A game on the other hand either will or will not be played by the masses.

Anyhow, without further ado, I present the unfinished product. Trepidation, an open source first person shooter which has been shelved for almost 5 years.

While I'm not the person to go through and build the gfx and 3d models, I did go through and fix about 3 dozen bugs in the code. The master server has been running for almost 6 years, with no plans of going down soon. If interest is generated in this project, I would consider pursuing it further, otherwise - here is what we had. The source code is available via subversion (see the site).

Here is a quick video highlighting the weapons (a work in progress). Visit the website here: http://trepidation.u7net.com

Technology… I Feel Cheated.

When I was young....

I was told that by the year 2000 flying cars would be commonplace, in 2011 Flying cars are not commonplace. Instead, Flying in America is one of the most awful activities one can partake in that involves being fondled and having your shampoo poured out.

I was told that by the year 2000 more than 5% of the human race would be colonizing space and that the moon would be a popular vacation resort. Instead, we stopped going to the moon nearly 40 years ago and a human being hasn't left orbit since.

I was told that by the year 2000 household robots would be commonplace in most homes, and that these robots would free humans up from common housework. In 2001 Housework performing robots are not commonplace, although if you have enough money you can pay an undocumented alien well below minimum wage and treat them like crap for the same result.

I was told that by the year 2000 the average adult would have twice as much leisure time because they would only work 15-18 hours a week. In 2011 most adults in corporate America have an average work week of 50-80 hours.

I was told that by the year 2000 the worlds governments would unite and technology would stop any need or desire to wage wars. *cough* no comment.

Don't even get me started on jetpacks.....

Web Series: Pioneer One

Pioneer One is a web series that is gaining a lot of momentum with the drama and sci-fi fanbases alike.  The creators initially raised $6000 for the pilot through the funding site Kickstarter.com.    Within the first week the pilot episode had been downloaded 420,000 times, 170,000 more downloads than predicted.  Distributed through vodo, bit-torrent and Vimeo,  the pilot was featured at the New York Television Festival and won Best Dramatic Series. They are gearing up to release episodes 3 and 4.  And I have to say it's a must watch.  the production is impressive given the low budget and the story itself as with the acting are on par with a larger flick.

From the website:
A mysterious spaceship enters Earth's atmosphere, spreading radiation over hundreds of miles of rural Montana. Officials are quick to bring up the possibility of a terrorist attack, specifically the detonation of a dirty bomb, but an investigation of the debris in Canada uncovers a live human being in a Soviet space suit in an unstable condition. A note handwritten in Russian found at the crash site says that the man is the child of cosmonauts living at a base on Mars.

I'd also highly recommend sending some cash their way after you buy me a beer for telling you about such a great series.

Web Series: Arc

Television hasn't been making my Sci-Fi fix lately, and being a fan of web series in general I was happy to stumble across Arc.  The last great sci-fi web series I stumbled across was Afterworld.  This is a few steps above.

With a $50k budget, and some bigger names in it.  This really makes the cut for great sci-fi.   Starring Renee O' Connor of Xena fame and directed by Trey Stokes, Stokes has an extensive resume of involvement in sci-fi series and film. He played a Tellarite Delegate in two episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise and worked in motion capture and/or puppeteering on notable films such as The Abyss, RoboCop 2, Batman Returns, Species, Starship Troopers, and The Blob.

The first season runs 9 episodes clocking in at about 4-6 minutes each, and frankly, I couldn't stop watching -- I ended up watching all 9 episodes in one sitting. I highly recommend this one.

The bad news is that 60Frames the production company that produced the series is now defunct due to "hard economic times" leaving season 2 in a questionable status.

Watch all 9 episodes here on Hulu: http://www.hulu.com/ark
